What clay remembers
A vessel begins as earth, but it does not remain earth. Between the hand and the kiln, clay becomes a record of pressure, water, time and heat — a material with a history older than any single style.
Before the object, there is the material
Clay is not one substance with one fixed recipe. It is a family of earth materials whose behavior changes with mineral content, water and preparation. Its most important quality for a maker is plasticity: when wet, it can be shaped; when dried and fired, it becomes a durable ceramic body. The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes this transformation as clay moving from high plasticity to a robust material capable of everyday use.
That change is more than a technical step. It is why ceramic objects can hold both touch and time: the surface keeps traces of forming, while firing gives the object a life beyond the softness of the original earth.
There is no single beginning
It is tempting to tell the history of pottery as a straight line: earth, then vessel, then civilization. The archaeological record is more plural. Fired clay appears in different places, in different forms and for different purposes. In the Middle East, the British Museum associates the Pottery Neolithic with the first fired pottery vessels around 7000 BCE, while the wider history of ceramics also includes earlier fired clay objects and independent traditions elsewhere.
The important point is not a single date. It is the repeated human recognition that a local material could become a container, a tool, a surface for memory, or an object of ritual. Pottery survives unusually well in the archaeological record — even broken sherds can preserve evidence of food, trade, technique and daily life.
From hand to wheel
The earliest vessels were shaped by hand, often by joining pads or coils of clay. The British Museum’s account of a Majiayao jar from China records hand modelling and the use of clay built up in pads; its catalogue also describes coiling as ropes of clay layered into a profile and smoothed at the joins.
The wheel introduced a different relationship between the maker and the form: rotation made circularity repeatable, but it did not remove the hand. A surviving fired-clay wheel from Ur, dated to about 3000 BCE, is described by the British Museum as one of the earliest surviving potter’s wheels. The wheel is a tool for rhythm — pressure, release, lift, and the return of the same circumference.
Fire is the irreversible line
Drying is not firing. A dried vessel can return to mud when water is introduced; a fired vessel has crossed a material threshold. The temperature, atmosphere and duration of firing alter color, density and strength. Earthenware is generally porous and fired at lower temperatures, while stoneware is fired above about 1200°C and becomes dense and impervious to liquid, according to a ceramic terminology guide published by The Met.
Surface is part of this language. Ancient Greek potters, for example, used refined clay slip for painted imagery; the British Museum notes that the shine of many Athenian pots comes from the nature of the slip rather than a modern glaze. What looks like decoration is therefore also material science: a thin layer of earth responding to heat.
Clay in the living present
These histories are not sealed in museums. They continue through working potters and local knowledge. A British Museum record of a 2012 toddy pot from Thathappilly in Kerala documents a hand-made vessel formed from two mould-shaped hemispheres, joined together, finished with a coil rim and fired in a kiln. The object is a reminder that technique is not simply an old idea preserved in the past; it is a living negotiation between material, body, place and use.
For MANN & FORM, this is where history becomes relevant. The aim is not to imitate an ancient vessel or to turn craft into nostalgia. It is to pay attention to the same elemental sequence: earth made workable, a form found through the hand, and fire giving permanence to an object intended for everyday life.
